The NERA Journal, created in 1998, is a publication of the Center for Studies, Research, and Projects on Agrarian Reform (NERA), affiliated with the Department of Geography and the Postgraduate Program in Geography of the College of Science and Technology (FCT) at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Presidente Prudente campus. It is a free, online, continuously published periodical, with an editorial focus on themes related to the agrarian question, land struggle, agrarian reform, socioterritorial movements, peasantry, agribusiness, agriculture, public policies, countryside education, rural-urban relationship, gender, labor and agroecology. The journal publishes original articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English.

Since 2015, NERA Journal has been undergoing a process of internationalization. With this in mind, international researchers have been included in the editorial board, such as Antonio Augusto Rossotto Ioris from Cardiff University, Hannah Wittman from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Wendy Wolford from Cornell University. The same applies to the scientific board, currently composed of researchers from Latin America, North America and Europe. In addition to international reviewers, it is important to highlight that, in the case of national reviewers, NERA Journal values regional and gender diversity in the composition of the board. Article evaluation forms are constantly updated to ensure the best possible evaluation of submissions to the journal.

In recent years, NERA Journal has also increased the number of articles published in other languages, particularly in English, in addition to expanding the dissemination of these works on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The editorial team of NERA Journal has been actively participating in geography editor forums since 2015 (organized within the scope of the National Association of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Geography - ANPEGE) and at UNESP since 2017, with the aim of enhancing the editorial guidelines of the journal. Since 2020 the journal has been affiliated with the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC). Furthermore, since 2021, Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been assigned to all published articles. Since 2018 NERA Journal has been competing in calls for proposals from the Vice-Presidency for Research (PROPe) with the aim of obtaining funding for DOI and article translation.

In 2017, NERA Journal was classified by QUALIS CAPES (2013-2016 quadrennium) as A2, and in 2022 (2017-2020 quadrennium), as A1.

The NERA Journal is an Open Access journal, which determines that the author owns the copyright and has permission to place copies of the article in other repositories. It also corresponds to the condition in which the copyright holder of a Academic work grants use rights to others with an open license, allowing immediate free access to the work and allowing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing , transmit it as data to software or use it for any other lawful purpose. The NERA Journal uses the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 Attribution 4.0 International. The NERA Journal offers all its published content free of charge to be browsed, downloaded and distributed. The NERA Journal follows the SciELO Brasil Open Science Compliance Form.

The NERA Journal operates in accordance with the ethical principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Code of Ethics American Educational Research Association, the Code of Good Scientific Practices of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Council of Science Editors (CSE) regarding publication.

In order to promote research integrity, strengthen transparency in the process, and uphold ethical standards, all material submitted and published in NERA Journal must adhere to the Guidelines for Best Practices to Strengthen Ethics in Scientific Publishing and the Open Science Compliance Form.

The NERA Journal adopts the definition of misconduct as outlined by the Office Research Integrity (ORI), which consists of: i) Plagiarism: the appropriation of ideas, processes, results, or words of another person without proper credit. Self-plagiarism should also be avoided; ii) Falsification: manipulating materials, equipment, or research processes, omitting data or results, so that the research is not accurately represented in the research record; iii) Fabrication: inventing data or results, whether through recording or reporting.

These misconducts result in ethical violations, leading to works based on the presentation of falsified data, data manipulation, procedures, and results, as well as the improper appropriation of third-party ideas without proper recognition. Until February 2024, all manuscripts submitted to NERA Journal were checked using the plagiarism detection software "Plagius". Starting from March 2024, submitted files are checked using "iThenticate". Manuscripts with detected plagiarism are automatically rejected, and authors are notified. NERA Journal understands that good research practices and ethics also involve the evaluation process and therefore has guidelines for scientific assessment. Among the main elements are: conflicts of interest; non-disclosure of the manuscript to third parties; and the political importance of the assessment.

Manuscripts submitted to NERA Journal cannot be submitted to any other journal while under review. The practice of submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal is considered duplicate publication. The practice of improperly dividing study results into more than one article is understood as redundant publication and, if detected, results in the rejection of the article. Such actions constitute ethical violations.

If any research misconduct or unethical behavior is detected by the authors, the submission will be automatically archived. In cases of reports of research misconduct or unethical behavior by authors in already published manuscripts, the report will be internally investigated, and the manuscript will be removed from the system.

The NERA Journal focuses on publishing original articles that are the result of research on topics related to agrarian question (such as land struggle, agrarian reform, socioterritorial movements, peasantry, agribusiness, agriculture, public policies, countryside education, rural-urban relationship, gender, labor and agroecology). The aim is to contribute to knowledge construction through scientific communication and facilitate conditions for debate within Agrarian Geography. The NERA Journal publishes original articles resulting from research and critical reviews of books related to agrarian question. Authors are required to declare that their manuscript is unpublished and is not being submitted or under review elsewhere.

Authors are encouraged to preprint the articles submitted for evaluation on reliable preprint servers. A preprint is a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and deposited on reliable preprint servers before or in parallel with journal submission. This practice, along with continuous publication, serves as mechanisms to expedite research communication. In this case, authors should contact the editors of Revista NERA before manuscript submission for further information on the process and to sign the Open Science Compliance Form, available here. We emphasize that the manuscript should only be published after evaluation by the scientific board of Revista NERA.

Manuscripts submitted to Revista NERA undergo an initial desk review before being forwarded for scientific evaluation. Manuscripts are automatically archived when: i) they are not suitable for Revista NERA's scope; ii) they are not formatted according to the author guidelines; iii) they do not comply with Revista NERA's editorial policies (including absence of individual contribution statement and plagiarism); iv) they lack clear objectives and methodological procedures; v) they do not represent research findings.

Starting from November 2022, Revista NERA has adopted the informed peer review model, in which manuscripts will be published with the identification of the associate editor responsible for the editorial process of the article. All received manuscripts are sent to two members of the scientific board for evaluation. Reviewers do not have access to the authors' identities, and vice versa. In case of discrepant editorial decisions, the manuscript is forwarded for a third evaluation.

The NERA Journal encourages authors to submit, whenever possible, databases and other materials for dissemination, serving as resources for further research. All tables, images, maps, and other graphic elements should be submitted as supplementary documents. Revista NERA follows the guidelines established within the framework of the Guide for promoting openness, transparency, and reproducibility of research published by SciELO journals. Additionally, we recommend the list of repositories for depositing research data recommended by SciELO Brazil.

The NERA Journal does not charge any fees for submission processing (submission fees, editorial processing fees, Article Processing Charges (APCs), or page fees), nor for the processes of review, publication, distribution, or download.

The editorial team of NERA Journal, as well as the authors publishing in the journal, must always adhere to the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines encompass a set of directives that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in the study design, data analysis, and in the results and interpretation of findings. Additionally, NERA Journal observes a gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

In cases of manuscripts resulting from research involving human subjects, authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.

Articles published in NERA Journal must strictly adhere to the guidelines established by the Committee on Integrity in Scientific Activity of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). In case of any violation of these standards by any text, the article will be formally retracted, following the practice of the international scientific community. The NERA Journal publishes original articles resulting from research and critical reviews of books related to agrarian questions. The authors are required to declare that their manuscript is unpublished and is not being submitted or undergoing evaluation in another journal. Authors are encouraged to preprint submitted articles for evaluation on reliable preprint servers. In this case, authors should contact the editors of the NERA Journal before manuscript submission for further information on the process and signing of the Open Science Compliance Form, available here. We emphasize that the manuscript should only be published after evaluation by the scientific board of the NERA Journal.

In articles with more than one author, it is necessary to attach as a supplementary document the individual contribution statement. All authors must participate in the discussion of the results and in the review and approval of the final version of the work. The NERA Journal recommends that authors consult the CRediT Taxonomy. Manuscripts without the document will be automatically archived.

Authors should provide, at the time of submission (metadata), the title of the research from which the manuscript originates. After the scientific evaluation process, the research title should be inserted in the final version of the manuscript.

Title: Título (and subtitle, if applicable): should be centered, in Arial 14 bold font, with only the first letter of the first word capitalized.

English Title: Title (and subtitle, if applicable): should be centered, in Arial 12 bold font, with only the first letter of the first word capitalized.

Título en español: Título (y subtítulo, si lo hay): debe estar centrado, en fuente Arial 12 en negrita, y solo la primera letra de la primera palabra debe estar en mayúscula.

Abstract: Abstracts should contain a minimum of ten lines and a maximum of 15 lines. Abstracts should be clear, easily readable, and provide an excellent comprehensive summary of the article.

Keywords: They must be in Portuguese, English, and Spanish (minimum of three and maximum of five). The keywords must be included in the NERA Journal's keyword bank.

Language of the articles: In the NERA Journal, articles are accepted in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

Manuscript Length: Articles should have a minimum of 15 pages and a maximum of 20 pages.

Regarding Metadata: Authors' names should be inserted at the metadata stage and are only displayed in the file after the submission of the final version (after the scientific evaluation process). The NERA Journal does not accept the insertion of authors after the submission or acceptance of the article. Affiliation should be fully stated, including the following information: full name of the institution (institution acronym), city, state, and country. ORCID and CV Lattes link (the latter for Brazilian authors) are mandatory during the submission process. Contact email of the authors must be included at this stage. Additionally, in the metadata, there is a field for information about article funding, whose acknowledgment should be made by adding a footnote on the first page of the text stating the name of the agency, support modality (scholarship, grant, etc.), and name of the project to which the article is linked.

Individual Contribution Statement: In articles with more than one author, it is necessary to attach, as a supplementary document, the individual contribution statement. All authors must participate in the discussion of the results and in the review and approval of the final version of the work. The NERA Journal recommends that authors consult the CRediT Taxonomy. Manuscripts without the document will be automatically archived.

All illustrations, graphs, figures, photographs, maps, charts, and tables should be submitted along with the submission as supplementary documents and in their original format. In the case of images and maps, they should be submitted in files with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Systematic and/or location maps of the study area should have a graphic scale, legend, coordinates, and indication of the projection used. Thematic maps should have at least orientation and a graphic scale. Additionally, if possible, we recommend that thematic maps also include coordinates and indicate the geographic projection used. The NERA Journal strongly recommends the use of other forms of language in the texts, especially cartography. Charts and tables should not have colored rows and columns.

Graphics elements (images, figures, maps, graphs, charts, and tables) included in the body of the manuscript should be attached to the submission as supplementary documents in their original format. In the case of manuscripts with more than one author, the "Individual Contribution Statement" should be included as a supplementary document, following the model available in the guidelines for authors of the NERA Journal. NERA Journal encourages the submission of constructed and organized databases for manuscript preparation as supplementary documents.

If the manuscript is linked to research funded by any funding agency, the author(s) must, obligatorily, mention the respective funding agency. Recognition should be made by adding a footnote on the first page of the text stating the name of the funding agency, type of support (scholarship, grant, etc.), and the name of the project to which the article is linked. These same pieces of information should be inserted into the electronic form during the completion of step 2 - metadata submission (indexing).

Geographical Diversity of the Scientific Council: Considering the diversity of knowledge production in a country of continental dimensions, the NERA Journal seeks, in its editorial policy, to ensure plurality in the scientific council. The scientific council of the NERA Journal comprises members from all macro-regions of Brazil, as well as members from the following countries: Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, USA, Canada, Spain, England, Netherlands, and Wales.

Gender and racial diversity: NERA Journal has sought in its editorial policies to promote gender and racial diversity both in the scientific council and in relation to the authors.

Strengthening the Debate on the Scientific Evaluation of Articles: The NERA Journal has been encouraging the scientific council to discuss the importance of the reviews issued by them, enabling the understanding of reviewers in the process of building the NERA Journal. In addition to an evaluation form consisting of 46 guiding questions, the NERA Journal annually reformulates the guidelines for scientific evaluation in collaboration with the council.
